Keeping the Laundry from Piling Up – A Few Tips

About 100 years ago, doing laundry involved using some serious muscle-power. Considering this, we are pretty lucky to have access to a state of the art piece of machinery that makes washing clothes possible at home. Just toss a few shirts into the machine, add in cleaning product and turn on for clean and pleasant smelling clothes. It’s that simple yet homeowners find the task as arduous and hassle-prone as anything! It’s especially difficult to maintain good laundry practices when running a busy household. Having a set routine is necessary for a smooth laundry day.

That being said, designing a good laundry routine will help you prevent unwanted clothes pileup at the end of the week. Look at the following tips for a stress-free laundry day:

Don’t Set One Day for Doing Laundry

Most people have their laundry day designated over the weekend and while it makes sense, doing this isn’t the only effective way. Why wash all your dirty clothes after you have nothing clean to wear? Or why wash clothes only once every weekend? Wise homemakers forego the wash clothes on the weekend rule and have scheduled days throughout the week. As such, your washing schedule could be something like this:

Laundry Routine

  • Monday – whites (including towels and white bed sheets)
  • Tuesday – Dark towels and jeans
  • Wednesday – Dark colored clothes
  • Friday – Extra load (if needed)

This saves the weekend for that much needed relaxation and bonding time with the family. You can also focus on doing other important tasks during this time! Just chuck the clothes of the day in the washer before going to bed, and then load the dryer in the morning.

Do Try Folding Clothes As You Take Them Out

Not only is folding clothes after taking them out of the dryer incredibly time consuming but also hard to do right. Putting unfolded clothes in the dressers and wardrobes isn’t a good option as unfolded clothes come out wrinkled! You cannot take out the iron every time you go out to do errands, can you?

Out of all the clothes, folding button-down shirts is the most difficult. Look at the following technique and master the art of folding your button-down shirts:

  • Button the shirt, except for the cuffs. Place face-down on a flat surface with arms out to the sides.
  • Take one arm and fold it over the shirt’s back. Bring half the shirt’s body over.
  • Fold that same arm, back on itself and down (at an angle).
  • Repeat on other side.
  • Bring shirt halfway up from the back. Fold bottom half of the shirt once more to meet the shoulders.
  • Flip over and smooth out creases.

Remember that your family can always help you out with sorting, washing and folding newly cleaned laundry. Live with a cat and husband too disinterested in helping out with laundry?
